This week I assisted in more c-sections and normal deliveries. I also joined the doctor in the weekend shift and on call for the evenings/nights. I enjoyed assisting some hand and face surgery, which I became enthusiastic for during my Plastic Surgery internship. I helped a mother deliver a healthy baby and repaired her episiotomy, she was very grateful and asked my name to give to the baby, though the baby is a girl, still I appreciate the gesture! I saw this baby starting her life on our little planet, unfortunately I also witness sad stories.
Two women in breach labours after each other. In both cases the feet of the baby come out first, the doctor and I just arrive for the second one and manage to get the baby out. The other baby his life ended abruptly as it got stuck with his head in the woman’s pelvis and remained there, regardless of the attempts of the midwives to create space, pull, turn or change positions, the lifeless body eventually is pulled and pressed out, but this baby already passed away. It is confronting to see within a timespan of minutes the start of a life and the end of one. Briefly I question myself ‘what if...’ but I know the answers will not make a difference.
This week I also trained some enthusiastic midwife students in physiology and treatment of pain and in primary neonatal care, they enjoyed it and managed to reproduce the key points, thus objective completed!
One of the many patients I´ve attended with the doctor suffers, like most of them, from poverty and cannot pay his necessary operation. His name is Steven and he lost his family by rebel attacks. His friendly and positive attitude increase my sympathy, and I decide to help out a bit. Steven has no job but is like an autodidact carpenter/toolmaker/instrumentmaker, and as I have homesickness for my guitar and making music, I decide to buy from him a drum and handheld-piano (akogo) which he will make for me in the next weeks. I gave him some money to buy initial materials, I feel he will keep true to his word to make it for me, we’ll find out.

Dat zijn toch wel indrukwekkende ervaringen, Edwin. Leven en dood zo dicht bij elkaar. Maar als dokter zul je daar meer mee te maken krijgen in de toekomst. Mooi dat je die Steven wat tegemoet wilt komen.
Als hij die instrumenten levert zou ik daar graag foto's van willen zien. Over foto's gesproken: sinds ik mijn nieuwe camera heb ben ik fanatiek bezig om foto's te maken. Van Yinthe en Rense heb ik al een paar hele mooie gemaakt. Het lijkt mij ook heel fijn om, als je weer terug bent in Nederland, met jou er op uit te gaan om onze camera's eens goed aan het werk te zetten!
Vandaag in de tuin bezig geweest, want het was mooi weer.
Vanavond lekker filmpje kijken.
Met Susana volgen we nu Band of Brothers. Zie alweer uit naar morgen. Super!!

Hi Edwin,
Het persoonlijke en medische aspect van je verslaglegging van je verblijf lees ik met grote interesse; als je overschakelt naar het Engels ga ik je blog delen met de LC global health - zie maar. En wat details over de anesthesie worden altijd op prijs gesteld: epidurale? ketamine? nooit een anesthesioloog in de buurt? Tip: niet op teveel verzoeken ingaan, er volgen er dan altijd meer. Morgen hemelvaart, maar ook 7 hamsters op het programma - life continuous!

Hoi Edwin
Maar weer eens je site opgezocht en wat een verhaal. Zo van heel nabij maak je alles mee.
Bij oma en opa (Hovingh) gaat het op zich goed. Oma heeft een (trage) opgaande lijn in de fysiotherapie. Doel is dat oma zelfstandig achter de rollator kan. Opa waardeert alle zorg.
Mijn dochters Linda, Tamara en Debora zijn gistermiddag bij hen geweest en zijn met hen (in rolstoel)
even naar buiten gegaan, rondje Innersdijk en later in het restaurant van Innersdijk gegaan.
Een gezellige middag. tante Wietske en ik zullen er morgenmiddag heen gaan.
Wietske is crea (quilten) bezig en ik met cursus (modern) Hebreeuws. Zo zie je maar weer
nooit te oud om te leren.
Wel alle goeds toegewenst samen met je naasten daar.

So dat zijn wel heftige gebeurtenissen, je weet dat het alle dagen voorkomt maar zo dichtbij meemaken. V3el succes daar verder en blijf ook genieten van de prachtige landschappen.
