Grateful people and Sipi falls

This week I joined in gynaecological and orthopaedic operations. I also attended to the neonates care at the maternity ward and mother-child unit. A generous gift from a Canadean couple granted us an incubator for premature neonates, assisting their temperature maintenance and isolation from the harmful world full of bacteria and viruses they just entered. It is interesting to see same diseases with different outcome, and different diseases itself. For instance, I’ve seen several diabetes patients with amputated limbs, and leprosy patients with loss of fingers and toes. But also prolonged labour of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby in distress, treated by emergency caesarean section as I had assisted a few months ago in the Netherlands. The baby and mother are fine and grateful for our care.
One morning I am walking to the hospital and I hear a girl, I estimate her 4 years, shouting muzungu! Muzungu! As I keep walking I see her running out the house with a smile running towards me with open arms and as soon as she reaches me she hugs my legs. A happy start of the day!
In the weekend I arranged to go with a few colleagues towards the Kenian border. Here lies mount Elgon, an extinct volcano and one of the highest mountains in Africa. Its summit is shared by Kenia and Uganda, roughly 4300m high, its waterfalls fall along 100 meters creating lively rivers streaming through the country. These so-called Sipi falls are a beautiful daytrip for us to get out of the hospital and relax. The first waterfall is around 60meters high, we walk underneath and let the mist coming from the shower cool us down during this warm day. The second waterfall is a big hour walk up hill, through fields of bananas and coffee. Our guide guides us as we pass part of the river arising from the fall and continue upstream. As we draw closer, the sound becomes louder and the air more humid. The area around the waterfall is covered in tiny drops, like little diamonds sitting on green leafs. This second waterfall covers approximately 88 meters. We enjoy our lunch in a dry place and continue downhill towards the viewpoint for the third and biggest waterfall of Sipi falls. Here we gaze upon an enormous 100 meters downpour of continuous water, falling from a rocky red cliff, with a topping of bright green grass and trees. As the water leaps down and reaches its lowest part it is embraced by a green valley, nourished by this continuous lifestream that pours further through the almost pancake flat landscape, on its way to eventually meet its big brother, the Nile.

Wat een mooie foto's, Edwin. Wow, wat zul je dit prachtig hebben gevonden. Echt een prachtige natuur.
Ons Prunusboompje naast de voordeur bloeit nu en dat is ook mooi. Ik geef toe dat het iets minder spectaculair is als zo'n waterval, maar toch...
Onze meivakantie is nu begonnen en we zullen er een fijn weekje van maken.
Eerst maandag even naar Oma en oom Gerard en dan zien we wel verder.

Ziet er fantastisch uit! Misschien moeten wij ook maar eens naar die Sipi Falls. Hoe hoog was je op die Mount Elgon gekomen? schitterend uitzicht hoor. Wij hebben hier nog een pak koffie staan uit het Sipi gebied, vers geïmporteerd door Mark.
Morgen vliegen we met z'n vieren naar Spanje, de Costa Blanca in het zuid-oosten. Heerlijk 10 dagen in de zon bij vergelijkbare temperaturen als bij jou daar (het is daar nu 30 graden...).

Ik kwam tot zo'n 2500m volgens mij, prima te doen. Veel plezier in Spanje! (vergeet niet in te smeren) -

Wat skitterend dat wy meisjen kinne yn dyn exoatysk Afrika. It binne typysk fan dy plaatsjes sa we dy fan froeger út de zendingsboekjes kinne. Mar no is it oarsom. Moai dat wy (do) as Europeaan wat fan dizze minsken leare kinst.

Geweldig wat een land en wat een natuur daar is Amazing.

je krijgt de groeten van opa en oma uit Innersdijk. We waren vanmiddag even bij hen op bezoek geweest met I'-pad en hen zo wat voorgelezn van je reis verslagen. Ook hadden we een foto van jou en je begeleiders van deze site voor hen geprint. Deze staat op een leuk plekje in hun "huiskamer".
